SEATTLE — Josie Williams scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Utah Valley University won its fifth straight, 67-61, at Seattle University on Thursday in the Redhawk Center.
Maria Carvalho added 18 points and
Madison Grange finished with 14 as the trio combined for 60 of the team's 67 points. Williams double-double was her 20th of the season, tying the single-season school record.
"We didn't play our best basketball but those three were big for us throughout and we had others step up when we needed it," said UVU head coach
Dan Nielson. "It's tough to win on the road and to be able to grind this one out is big for this team. They kept making runs, but we had a lot of resolve and I'm proud of the fight we had. Now we have huge test for us on Saturday."
Megan Jensen had four points off the bench and scored on a putback with just over six minutes to go to break a 58-58 tie. The Wolverines (14-12, 9-6) led 60-58 when Grange and Williams scored on consecutive possessions late, with Williams' bucket coming at the 1:02 mark and giving UVU a 64-58 lead.
The Redhawks (9-18, 4-12) got a three from Courtney Murphy to get back within three, but Carvalho put the game away with two free throws with 23.7 seconds to go.
Kayla Anderson took only two shots and had one point on a late free throw but dished out four assists and grabbed seven rebounds and was plus-14 on the night while battling foul trouble. Seattle got 14 points from Murphy, who hit four 3-pointers on a night the Redhawks hit nine as a team.
Down 5-3 early, the Wolverines scored nine straight points to take a 12-5 lead. UVU later extended it to 10 on a pair of free throws from Carvalho to make it 17-9 after one.
Grange and Williams scored the first two buckets of the second quarter to give Utah Valley a 20-9 lead before the Redhawks went on a quick run to get right back into the contest. Seven straight points from Seattle U started a 13-2 surge that had the Wolverines trailing, 22-21, after Taliyah Clark hit her second 3-pointer.
UVU responded behind Williams, who helped regain and push the lead to seven, 36-29, by halftime. She made her last five attempts and scored 11 points UVU's own 13-2 run over the final four minutes of the second quarter. She ended the half with 17 points and eight rebounds while Carvalho had 10 and Grange added nine to account for all of Utah Valley's offense.
The teams played even for most of the third quarter with UVU holding a 51-44 lead with under two minutes left in the quarter. The Redhawks closed the quarter by scoring seven of the last nine points to get within two, 53-51, after three.
Utah Valley will now head to Riverside for a big contest at California Baptist. The Lancers fell at home to Dixie State on Thursday night and have a one-game lead on the Wolverines in third place in the WAC standings.
