ST. GEORGE, Utah — Utah Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead but Dixie State came back to win on Saturday, 13-5 in six innings to take the first WAC series of the season in the Old Hammer Rivalry. Four swings of the bat drove in 11 of the Trailblazers' (11-15, 2-1) runs in the game including two, three-run home runs.
The Wolverines (10-9, 1-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one in the first and four more in the second.
Linnah Rebolledo hit her second home run of the season with two down in the top of the first for UVU.
In the second,
Laynee Betancur singled home
Kyla Hardy and
Jaeden Barajas to make it 3-0, and later scored when
Kalena Shepherd hit her fourth home run of the season with two outs in the inning.
Shea Clements got Dixie State back in it with one swing of the bat, a three-run home run in the third to make it a 5-3 game. The Trailblazers took the lead in the fifth with a bases-loaded double from Laura Lockard that cleared the bases and made it 6-5.
In the sixth inning, Clements drove in a run with a bunt single before Lauren Almeida helped Dixie State pull away with a three-run homer to left. Rachel Campbell added a two-run home run before Carly Eldredge ended it with an RBI base hit to left.
Betancur had her second three-hit game of the series for the Wolverines while both Hannah Hughbanks and Clements had three-hit days for Dixie State.
The Wolverines will play midweek games at Weber State (March 22) and Utah State (March 23) before hosting Seattle U in WAC play next Friday and Saturday.
