OGDEN, Utah — Utah Valley University dropped a midweek contest at Weber State University, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field. The Wildcats (21-6) got a complete-game, four-hit shutout from Mariah Ramirez while her offense backed her with six runs in the third inning to help pull away.
The Wolverines (10-10) got two of their hits from
Madison Carr and had a couple of early chances to score but couldn't scratch across a run. In the first inning, Carr singled and stole second and
Kalena Shepherd followed her with an infield hit to put two on right out of the gate, but Ramirez stranded both runners. The Wildcats got their first run just two batters into the bottom of the first, after Mia Rushton doubled and then scored on a base hit by McKell McCuistion.
Joslyn Thieme, making her first career start for UVU, limited the damage to just the single run after striking out the next three batters. She finished with a career-high four strikeouts in two-plus innings of work.
Weber State broke it open in the third, scoring all six of its runs in the inning before an out was recorded. The Wildcats got a two-run triple from Faith Hoe and a two-run home run from Arissa Henderson in the inning.
Freshman
Anna Berger had the best appearance of her young career in relief for Utah Valley. She tossed four innings and didn't allow a run on three hits with a strikeout.
The Wolverines now head to Logan for a Wednesday contest at Utah State, which is slated for a 3 p.m. MT first pitch. The game can be seen on the Mountain West Network.
