SEDONA, Ariz. – Victoria Estrada fired a 1-over-par 217 to lead Utah Valley University by tying for ninth at Northern Arizona's Red Rocks Invitational at Oakcreek Golf Club.
After opening with a 1-under 71 on Saturday, Estrada then followed that up with back-to-back 1-over 73s on Sunday to record the top-10 finish. She also led the team with nine birdies over the three rounds and led the entire tournament in par-4 scoring with a 3.90 scoring average on par 4 holes.
As a team, UVU tied for 13th out of 19 teams with a 53-over-par 917. The Wolverines carded scores of 302, 309, and 306 en route to tying for 13th. WAC foe Grand Canyon won the tournament with a 1-over-par 865 (289-287-289), while host NAU took second at +7 (284-296-291) and in-state foe Weber State finished third at +13 (294-291-292). UVU tied for Montana for 13th place (917) and finished ahead of WAC foe Stephen F. Austin (928), Portland State (928), Northern Colorado (931), Longwood (941), and Montana State (957).
Caylyn Ponich was UVU's second finisher at the event by tying for 56th with a 16-over-par 232. Ponich carded scores of 74, 80 and 78 on her way to finishing 56th.
Makenzie McMillen was next by tying for 66th with a 19-over 235 (80-78-77), while
Leighton Shosted tied for 74th at 21-over (80-78-79—237) and
Bailey Henley tied for 79th (77-83-78—238).
UVU's
Lauren Taylor also competed at the tournament but as an individual and placed 103rd (88-82-85—255).
NAU's Eliska Kocourkova claimed medalist honors by winning the Red Rocks Invite with a 5-under-par 211 (68-73-70).
The Red Rocks Invitational concluded a busy stretch for UVU in which it took part in three events in less than a two-week span.
The Wolverines will next return to Arizona for their regular-season finale at the Bobcat Spring Invitational at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear on April 11-12. The 2022 WAC Championships will then follow on April 18-20 at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas.
