Utah Valley in the hunt after 36 holes at UTRGV Invite

The Wolverines will enter Tuesday’s final round just five strokes back of the tournament lead and freshman Leighton Shosted is currently tied for sixth at 7-over-par to lead the way for UVU.

MCALLEN, Texas – The Utah Valley University women's golf team is just five strokes back of the tournament lead after two rounds of play at the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club on Monday. 
 
The Wolverines currently sit in fifth place with a 50-over-par 626 after carding scores of 314 and 312 in windy and rainy conditions at McAllen Country Club on Monday. UVU will enter Tuesday's final round just five shots back of the tournament leader, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, who holds a +44 660. WAC foe Lamar is in second with a 623, while Houston Baptist and Illinois State are tied for third just one stroke ahead of UVU (625).   
 
Freshman Leighton Shosted is leading the way for the Wolverines at the event, as she's just two strokes back of the leader and currently tied for sixth at 7-over-par. Shosted fired rounds of 74 and 77 on the day to card a two-round total of 151. She also led the team with seven birdies on the day, as well as carded just the second eagle of her collegiate career by recording a three on the par-5 450-yard hole No. 6 in the opening round. 
 
Senior Bailey Henley and sophomore Caylyn Ponich too sit in the top-25 at the event, as both are tied for 24th at 14-over-par. Both Henley and Ponich posted identical scores of 81 and 77 to enter a tie for 24th place with a pair of 158s. 
 
Sophomore Anna Lesa is next for the Wolverines, as she's currently tied for 29th place with a 16-over 160 (79-81), while reigning WAC individual champion Victoria Estrada rounds out UVU's competitors in a tie for 38th place with a 17-over 161 (80-81). 
 
Currently in fifth place at the 15-team field, the Wolverines are ahead of Creighton (627), host UT Rio Grande Valley (628), Drake (628), Omaha (630), Incarnate Word (631), Stephen F. Austin (642), North Dakota (646), Tarleton (646), Texas Southern (649), and Texas A&M - Kingsville (698).
 
Individually, Drake's Haeri Lee is leading the way just two strokes ahead of UVU's Shosted at 5-over-par (71-78—149). 
 
The UTRGV Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with the event's final round beginning with a shotgun start at 7:15 a.m. MT/8:15 a.m. CT.
 
Following the conclusion of the UTRGV Invite, the Wolverines will travel to St. George, Utah to take part at the SUU Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational Thursday to Saturday, March 10-12, at Sunbrook Golf Course.
