Wolverines complete sweep of CBU

OREM, Utah — Katie Zuniga pitched her second straight complete game as Utah Valley University finished off a series sweep of California Baptist with a 6-3 win on Saturday afternoon. Mikaela Thomson had two hits for the Wolverines (16-17, 7-8) and Jordan Freas delivered a pinch hit, two-run single as UVU ran its winning streak to four straight.

"We've been working really hard defensively, because that was one piece we needed to really improve. It all starts with pitching and then letting the defense work behind them," said UVU head coach Cody Thomson. "We're trying to get a roll as we get ready for the WAC Tournament and I think we're starting to click."

Zuniga followed up her Friday shutout with a 101-pitch complete game with three strikeouts without allowing a walk. She didn't surrender a free pass in either outing while striking out seven combined over the two games and moving to 6-6 on the year.

The Lancers (24-23, 6-9) led 2-0 after single runs in the first and second before walks and errors allowed the Wolverines to take a 3-2 lead after two innings. UVU's first three hitters in the second walked and an attempt to get Thomson at the plate with the bases loaded on a grounder to third was dropped by the catcher to let the first run to score. Karleigh Olsen followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game and a two-out error at first allowed Megan Gibbs to score to give Utah Valley a 3-2 lead without registering a hit.

The Wolverines had the bases loaded again in the third via two walks and a hit batter when Freas came to the plate and lined a 2-2 pitch to right that scored both Gibbs and Danyé Albritton to make it 5-2. Freas' hit was the team's first of the game.

Raegan Cheyne got one run back in the fourth for California Baptist with a two-out single just inside the line past third, but Thomson doubled home Linnah Rebolledo from first in the bottom of the inning. Zuniga retired nine of the final 11 batters she faced, including the side in order in the seventh.

The Wolverines are scheduled for four rivalry games next week, with a single game at BYU on Wednesday before hosting Dixie State in a three-game WAC series next weekend. The next six games on the schedule are all against in-state opponents.
