FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Aaron Johnson punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships in Eugene after a personal best in the long jump on Wednesday at John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas.
Johnson first attempt was all he needed as his 7.78-meter jump earned the Wolverine his first trip to the NCAA finals, which take place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from June 8-11.
"It means a lot to me. Throughout the season I've talked to Coach about goals… and now to accomplish that and move forward means a lot. Having the support system that I have — my family, friends, coaches — I felt him out there with me," Johnson said.
In the 200-meter race,
Caleb Furnell ran a personal best 20.89 in the final heat of the night. He finished fifth in his heat and just outside the top 24 in his bid to advance to Friday's quarterfinals.
The women's events begin on Thursday with four Wolverines in action.
Taylor Viertel will compete in the 1,500-meter steeplechase, slated for a 6:30 p.m. CT start. Viertel is in heat two of four, with the top five from each heat plus the next four best times advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Everlyn Kemboi,
Hannah Branch and
Mazzie Melaney Preston will all compete in the 10,000-meter semifinal, which is scheduled for 9:10 p.m. CT. The top 12 from that event will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
