EUGENE, Oregon — Everlyn Kemboi and
Hannah Branch became Utah Valley University's first female All-Americans after their performances in Thursday's 10k at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Kemboi finished 12th to garner second-team All-America and Branch was 17th to earn honorable mention. The two, combined with Wednesday's men's competitors
Adam Bunker (3k steeplechase) and
Aaron Johnson (long jump), give the Wolverines a program record four All-Americans this outdoor season.
"To come here and compete at the pinnacle of the season and understand and see that they belong is a key for any athlete," said UVU head coach
Scott Houle. "Luckily these kids get to come back and hopefully have this experience again and improve on that. It helps when the other kids at home are watching because they train and workout at the same pace and same distance so hopefully it's showing them they can get here too."
Kemboi ran the 10,000-meter race in 33:41.50 while Branch finished with a time of 33:49.23. Branch's race was the final of her track career but she still has one season of cross country left. Kemboi's finish is the highest ever for a UVU student-athlete at the outdoor championships, and she becomes the third person to earn second-team honors after Michael McPherson (decathlon, 2014) and Nicholas Taylor (100m, 2016).
