OREM—
Heather Stainbrook and
Julianna Carter each scored goals and the Utah Valley defense picked up the shutout in a 2-0 win over Colorado College in the team's home opener at Clyde Field on Monday night.
"I thought we kept possession well, but I didn't think we were as potent as we like to be in the attacking third," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "I wanted the tempo to be a little higher, but it got better in the second half. I thought we scored two really good goals and got a shutout win against a good team."
Utah Valley got on the scoreboard in the 51st minute after
Heather Stainbrook sent a corner kick short to
Hannah Lee. Lee then passed it back to Stainbrook just outside the box on the left side and immediately fired a shot that ricocheted off the far post and into the back of the net to give UVU the 1-0 lead.
Jenna Shepherd intercepted a pass in the 58th minute and sent it down the middle of the field to
Faith Webber who then one touched it to
Nicole Ray on the left side. Ray then sent a cross towards the far post where
Julianna Carter shot it with her left foot mid-air and into the goal for the score, giving the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage.
Utah Valley dominated both sides of the match, outshooting the Tigers 17-4. The Wolverines also outshot Colorado College 11-2 on goal. Webber led the Wolverines with four shots with one on frame. Carter tallied three shots, all on frame.
Jenna Shepherd had a pair of shots on goal from the backline.
Idalia Serrano picked up the clean sheet in the box as the Wolverine defense kept the ball on the offensive side of the field for the majority of the match. Serrano had two saves on the night.
