Box Score PROVO, Utah – Brigham Young University defeated Utah Valley University 3-0 (25-16, 25-15,25-20) inside the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. BYU (7-3) was led by Erin Livingston, who had ten kills and benefited from 26 assists from Whitney Brower. UVU (5-6) was led by freshman
Avery Shewell who had 11 kills on a .562 attack percentage.
Tori Dorius added nine kills in the match for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley got out to a 6-5 lead in the first set before BYU responded with nine straight points to go up 14-6. Alyssa Montoya had three service aces during the run for the Cougars before Montoya gave up the serve on a service error. The Wolverines attempted to chip back into the opening set after a 3-0 run brought it back to 19-11 BYU with a Dorius kill and two Cougar errors. The UVU rally continued with a second 3-0 run, on a kill from
Jules Fink, a third Cougar error, and a block assist from Dorius and
Makayla Broadbent to make it 20-14 BYU. BYU closed out the opening set for a 25-16 victory.
BYU jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the first timeout to take control of the second set. Fink and Shewell came up with back-to-back kills to get the Wolverines on the board in the second set. Dorius came up with two kills combined with a Cougar error, making it 11-5. Shewell added back-to-back kills later in the set to get the Wolverines back to 20-13 BYU advantage. BYU won the second set 25-15 after two UVU errors.
Dorius provided two kills in the third set to put UVU 3-1 early. BYU rallied to take a 6-4 lead before a challenge was reversed and a Kennedy kill tied the match at 6. The Wolverines took advantage of three errors from BYU and a Dorius kill to bring the set to 13-10 BYU. Coming out of the media time out, Dorius added a kill to cut the Cougar lead to 15-12. BYU responded with a 3-0 run to go up 18-12.
Ke'ilani Sedrick entered the game with a service ace, and Shewell added a kill to force BYU to take a timeout with a 20-16 lead. BYU led 22-18 in the third set before closing out the set on a 4-2 run to win the third set 25-20.
Utah Valley will now turn its attention to WAC play and travel south to Utah Tech on Sept. 22 before returning home to Lockhart Arena on Sept. 24 for a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Seattle U. Tickets are available for the match against Seattle U with a link above.
