OREM, Utah - No. 3 Iowa State defeated Utah Valley 31-9 on Saturday night inside Lockhart Arena. ISU (10-2, 3-0) used victories from ranked wrestlers in the middleweights to pull away from UVU (1-5, 1-2).
Kase Mauger,
Ty Smith, and No. 7
Demetrius Romero all picked up wins for the Wolverines.
Â
"It was a good effort; all our guys are fighting. We got off to a good start tonight, and anytime you wrestle a team with Iowa State's history, getting wins early helps. We did a better job tonight of attacking from the bottom, and we need to be ready to attack no matter what the opponent is doing. I felt like we were more aggressive tonight, and we saw some improvements from (Friday) night," said UVU head coach Greg Williams.
Â
UVU won the night's first match after Mauger picked up a 10-9 decision over Caleb Fuessley. Mauger jumped to an early lead of 8-3 using a reverse, near fall, and a takedown. Fuessely fought back in the third period, cutting Mauger's lead down to one in the waning seconds but  Mauger held on for the victory.
Â
Following Iowa State's first victory of the night at 133,
Ty Smith secured a 5-0 decision over Drew Woodley. Smith led 2-0 after a takedown and added a point in the second with an escape. In the third period, Woodley was called for a stalling, and a point was awarded to Smith before a final additional point was awarded for riding time.
Â
The dual was tied at 6-6 before Iowa State won the next three matches, with No. 6 Paniro Johnson winning by decision. At 157, No. 30, Jason Kraisser narrowly defeated Tyson Humphreys. Humphreys led 2-1 after the first period using a takedown to gain the lead. Kraisser fought back with a second-period escape before heading to sudden death with the bout tied at 2-2. Early in the overtime, Kraisser scored a takedown to win the match. At 165, 2021 NCAA Champion and third-ranked David Carr pinned
Danny Snediker to give ISU an 18-6 lead.
Â
At 174, No. 7 Romero picked up his second win of the weekend and ninth win of the year, defeating Carter Schmidt in a 6-2 decision. Romero used an early takedown to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. After Schmidt tied the match, Romero regained the lead after a second stalling call against the Cyclone.
