SAN JOSE, Calif. — Kendi Bellini scored his first goal of the season and Parker Allen picked up four saves in his first career start as Utah Valley battled the San Jose State Spartans to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Complex.
After SJSU scored within the opening five minutes, the Wolverines settled down and went on to out-shoot the Spartans 13-9 on the afternoon. The goalkeepers put on a showcase, as both Allen and SJSU's David Sweeney picked up four crucial saves.
The Spartans struck first in the fourth minute after a turnover just outside the penalty area. The Wolverine defense was unable to close down Angel Iniguez, who snuck the ball past a diving Allen.
Moments after Michele Signorelli nearly equalized in the 28th minute, Bellini was able to tie things up in the 32nd minute after breaking down the right flank. Bellini took the feed from Nik Kizerian, then dribbled along the end line before chipping it past a diving Sweeney at a sharp angle.
Omar Yehya forced Sweeney into a pair of saves in the 55th and 56th minutes. The Wolverines out-shot SJSU 8-4 in the second half, including three shots on goal for Utah Valley to one for the Spartans.
After clearing an SJSU free kick in the final minute of play, the Wolverines had one last chance on the counterattack, but were unable to get any shots away. Owen Knecht and Yehya sped down the field and got to the Spartan penalty area, but SJSU was able to close down any chances.
The Wolverines will return to Utah this week for an Old Hammer Rivalry showdown against the Utah Tech Trailblazers in St. George. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MDT and the match will be streamed live on WAC International.
