UVU falls despite out blocking UTRGV 13-3

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball fell to UT Rio Grande Valley 3-0 (26-28, 21-25, 19-25) on Saturday afternoon inside Lockhart Arena. The Wolverines (4-12, 1-4) held a 13-3 advantage over UTRGV (11-8, 5-1), with Vittoria Price leading the way with a career-high nine total blocks on the day and Abbie Medeiros had 18 assists while going over 1,800 in her career.

The Wolverines got five kills from Avery Shewell and four from Tori Ellis in the first set, as they held the lead for most of the set. The defense at the net led the way with six blocks to UTRGV's one. Price had two solo blocks and three block assists. The Vaqueros won the opening set after ending on a 5-1 run after UVU rallied from a 23-21 deficit to tie the set and had match point.

UTRGV led 12-10 in the second before the Wolverines tied the set at 12 after kills from Medeiros and a block assist by Price and Kalea Kennedy after the Vaqueros regained the lead at 14-12, before Price answered with block assists with Kennedy and Hailey Cuff to tie the match up at 14-14. The set turned on UVU later as UTRGV pulled away to secure the second set.

UVU looked to mount a comeback in the third set as they trailed 11-8 before a 3-0 run would aid them to tie the match at 11 after a pair of UTRGV errors and one of Ellis's ten kills.  Utah Valley kept close, only trailing by one or two until the Vaqueros pulled away with a 7-2 run to make it 23-17.

Shewell finished with a match-high 12 kills and three aces in the match. Ellis passed Kalani Norris in points and is now tenth all-time in points with 957.
