CHARLOTTE, N.C.—
Drake Allen scored a team-high 12 points with six rebounds to lead Utah Valley in a 62-45 setback to Charlotte on Wednesday night at Halton Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.
It marks the first loss of the season for the Wolverines who fall to 2-1 overall. Charlotte improves to 2-1 on the season with the win.
"We've got to defend better," said Utah Valley head coach
Todd Phillips. "We had a chance to tie the game with less than 10 minutes to go and they knocked down a three and all of a sudden, it's an eight-point game and then we were scrambling the rest of the way. We need learn from this and get better."
Charlotte jumped out to a 12-2 lead through the first four minutes of the game. The 49ers got the lead up to 12 points, 20-8, with 8:19 to play in the half, but Utah Valley rallied with a 7-2 run to get within seven points, 22-15, with 6:32 on the clock. Charlotte then scored eight of the next 10 points to extend their lead to 13 points, 30-17, with three minutes remaining in the half. The Wolverines then finished the half on a 4-1 run to cut the 49er lead to 10 points, 31-21, at the half.
Trailing by 12 points, 37-26, with 16:42 on the clock, at
Trevin Dorius layup and a
Caleb Stone-Carrawell three sparked a 9-2 UVU run over the next four minutes to cut the 49er lead to just five points, 39-34, with 12:50 remaining. Dorius knocked down a pair of free throws at the 9:18 mark to cut the Charlote leqd to only two points, 41-39. The 49ers countered right back with 10 unanswered points to take a 51-39 lead with 4:29 remaining. Charlotte then outscored UVU 11-6 over the final five minutes to secure the 62-45 win.
Allen scored his 12 points on 6 of 13. He also pulled down six rebounds with two steals, one assist, and a block.
Stone-Carrawell was also in double figures with 10 points, connecting on 4 of 9 shots from the floor with a 2 of 4 mark from beyond the arc.
Dorius scored neared a double-double with eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.
Utah Valley shot 34 percent (18-53) with an 18.8 percent (3-16) from long range. Charlotte connected on a 40.4 percent (23-57) clip from the floor, including a 23.8 percent (5-21) mark from three-point range.
Dishon Jackson led Charlotte with 16 points.
Utah Valley now travels to St. Augustine, Florida to participate in the Jacksonville Classic, Nov. 19-20. The Wolverines will open the Classic against Southern Miss (0-0) on Nov. 19 at 10:30 a.m. (MT). The game will be streamed live on Pass The Ball Live Media, which is available at
