Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored a game-high 19 points and
Nate Tshimanga added a career-high 14 points to lead Utah Valley to a 70-54 win over in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday night at the UCCU Center.
Utah Valley improves to 6-3 overall on the season while Weber State falls to 4-3.
"I'm really proud of our guys tonight," said Utah Valley head coach
Todd Phillips. "It's a big time win. We had a bunch of guys step up and play really well. It's a complete turnaround from Saturday's loss at Utah Tech. I was proud of the energy our guys brought."
Stone-Carrawell scored his 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting from the floor, including a 3 of 6 mark from long range. He was also a perfect 2 for 2 at the free throw line. Stone-Carrawell also had four rebounds with two assists on the night.
Tshimanaga scored a career-high 14 points, knocking down 6 of 9 shots. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with two steals and one assist.
Jaden McClanahan was in double figures with 10 points. He also dished out five assists with three rebounds and a steal.
Tanner Toolson had eight points, while
K'mani Doughty added seven with four rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a pair of steals.
Osiris Grady scored six points with six rebounds, while
Trevin Dorius led UVU with four blocks.
As a team, Utah Valley shot a blistering 53.8% (28-52) from the field with a 53.3% (8-15) clip from beyond the arc. The Wolverines held Weber State to 35.6% (21-59) shooting, including a 30% (6-20) mark from long range.
Utah Valley now heads out on the road to play Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Saturday in Corvallis. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. (MT). The game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Network.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams played through four lead changes and one tie over the first five minutes of the game but Weber State's Viljami Verplancken hit back-to-back threes as part of an 8-0 WSU run to give the Wildcats a 12-8 lead with 13:48 to play. The Wolverines cut the lead to just one point two times over the next six minutes, but back-to-back WSU threes extended the Wildcat lead to seven points, 26-19, with 7:41 to go in the half. The Wolverines responded with an 19-6 run over the final eight minutes of the half to give UVU a 38-32 lead at the break.
Weber State cut the UVU lead to just two points, 45-43, through the first 5:30 of the second half. Utah Valley's
Jaden McClanahan knocked down a pair of free throws and Tshimanga hit a shot to spark a 17-2 UVU run over the next 7:49 to extend its lead to 17 points, 62-45, with 6:49 to play. The two teams played even the rest of the way as Utah Valley secured the 70-54 win.
