Utah Valley comes up just short in 74-71 loss at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oregon— Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored 19 points and Tanner Toolson helped with 17 to lead Utah Valley in a 74-71 setback to Pac-12 foe Oregon State at Gill Coliseum on Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Oregon.
 
Utah Valley (6-4) had a shot to tie the game at the buzzer, but Stone-Carrawell's shot fell short in the three-point loss to Oregon State (6-3). The game was close throughout, including 15 lead changes and 10 ties. 
 
Stone-Carrawell scored his 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field, including a pair of threes. He also knocked down 5 of 6 shots at the free throw line. 
 
Toolson connected on 6 of 11 shots from the floor, including a 3 of 6 mark from long range for his 17 points. He also had four rebounds, one block, and a steal.
 
K'mani Doughty was also in doube figures with 12 points, while Jaden McClanahan had nine points with five assists and three rebounds. 
 
Utah Valley shot 50% (24-48) from the field with a 43.8% (7-16) mark from beyond the arc. Oregon State connected on 51% (25-49) of its shots on the night with a 38.9% (7-18) clip from three-point range. 
 
The Wolverines were outrebounded 34-18 in the game, including 8-2 on the offensive glass. OSU had 11 second chance points. 
 
Utah Valley returns to The Beehive State to take on in-state foe Utah on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network and over the airwaves on ESPN 960 AM radio.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams played through five lead changes and one tie over the first four minutes of the game as Oregon State took a 12-10 lead at the 16-minute mark of the first half. Toolson then knocked down back-to-back threes to spark a 15-2 UVU run over the next 6:34 to give the Wolverines a 25-14 lead with 9:29 remaining in the half. OSU countered with a 7-2 run over the next three minutes to cut the UVU lead to six points, 27-21, with 6:08 to play. The Wolverines then scored six of the next eight points to extend the lead back to 10 points, 33-23, with 4:20 left in the half. Oregon State cut the lead back to four points, 35-31, with one minute to go. The Beavers scored three of the final four points to cut the UVU lead to two points, 36-34, at the half.
 
Oregon State scored seven of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 41-39 lead at the 16-minute mark. OSU held on the two-point lead, 50-48, with 11:19 to play, but four straight Stone-Carrawell points capped off by a dunk gave UVU back the lead, 52-50, with 10:14 remaining. The two teams then played through four ties and three lead changes over the next 6:15, to a 66-66 tie with 3:59 left to play. The Beavers outscored UVU 8-5 over the final four minutes to secure the 74-71 win. UVU had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Stone-Carrawell's shot fell short.
