Utah Valley defeats California Baptist at home, 71-55

OREMTrey Woodbury scored a game-high 16 points and Blaze Nield matched a season high with 14 points off the bench to lead Utah Valley to a 71-55 win over California Baptist on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center.

Utah Valley improves to 19-6 overall and stays atop the WAC standings with a 10-2 league mark. The Wolverines improve to an impressive 10-1 at the UCCU Center this season. The win also clinches a spot in the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, March 7-11.

"I was really proud of our guys and the way we took care of the ball tonight," said Utah Valley head coach Mark Madsen. "The ball was moving pretty well and its fun for our guys when the ball is moving like that. California Baptist is a tough team and they've beaten us in the past. They've had players go off on us before. We've been preaching all week that we need to be ready to go. Our focus level was high, and we did a good job of taking care of the ball. Five turnovers for us is a great milestone in terms of where we want to go."

Trey Woodbury knocked down a jumper to open the game and the Wolverines then threw down four straight dunks as UVU jumped out to a 12-3 lead through the first five minutes of the game. California Baptist (13-12, 5-7) cut the Wolverine lead to four points, 19-15, with 8:24 left in the half but UVU countered right back with a 9-2 run to take a 28-17 lead with 5:46 on the clock. The two teams played evenly the rest of the way as UVU took a 34-23 lead into the break.

Utah Valley maintained its 11-point lead through the first 8:28 of the second half, taking a 46-35 lead with 11:34 remaining. Nield then scored six unanswered points to spark an 11-2 UVU run over the next 2:24 to give UVU a 20-point, 57-37 lead with 9:16 on the clock. CBU would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way as the Wolverines secured the 71-55 win.

Woodbury scored his 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 2-of-5 mark from long range. He also dished out four assists and pulled down two rebounds with one steal.

Nield scored 14 points on a 5-of-7 clip from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 mark from the free throw line. He also had four rebounds with three assists and a steal.

Aziz Bandaogo recorded his 14th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a game-high five blocks to go along with two assists.

Le'Tre Darthard had eight points and six rebounds. Tahj Small also had eight points, while Ethan Potter scored a season-high six points with six rebounds. Utah Valley got 29 points from its bench.
