Utah Valley signs Lamar grad transfer Abby Gemza

OREM—Utah Valley University women's soccer head coach Chris Lemay has announced that Lamar graduate Abby Gemza has transferred to Utah Valley and will join the team for the 2023 season.

"What a great addition Abby will be to our program," said Lemay. "Abby has captained a team that has played in the NCAA Tournament. She has great experience, a ton of game minutes at the highest level, and possesses leadership qualities that will help in our midfield and back line. The team and staff fell in love with her personality on her official visit and she will be right at home with our team culture."

Gemza, a 5-foot-7 midfielder/defender, played two seasons at Lamar where she played in 28 matches for the Cardinals. Last season, she played in 17 matches and made 15 starts, helping the Cardinals to a Southland Conference regular season title, a Southland Tournament championship, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Rosholt, Wisconsin native recorded a goal in a 2-0 win over Northwestern State and assisted a game-winning goal against Houston. Gemza earned Southland All-Tournament team honors after helping the Cardinals to a Southland Tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Gemza played her freshman season at Austin Peay where she played in 18 matches and made 15 starts. She had one goal and two assists during her freshman season with the Governors.

Gemza prepped at Stevens Point Area High School where she earned multiple all-conference accolades. She also earned unanimous First Team All-Conference honors during her junior and senior seasons at SPASH. Gemza scored 56 goals during her for years with the Panthers.

Gemza is a grad transfer and will be entering Utah Valley's Master of Public Service program. She has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
