OREM, Utah — Utah Valley brought the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to capitalize, as the Wolverines dropped their WAC series finale to the Grand Canyon Lopes 5-2 on Saturday at Wolverine Softball Field.
Payge Armendariz roped her first collegiate home run through the wind out to right to cut the deficit down to three in the bottom of the seventh. Kassidy Stiles singled and Libbie Hawker doubled to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Lopes were able to hold the line and get out of the jam.
Katie Zuniga started in the circle once again and was able to avoid the crooked number, much like her outing last week against Abilene Christian. The Lopes were able to tag Zuniga for one run in the second, third and fourth before pushing across a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. Zuniga struck out three over 4+ innings pitched.
Stiles went 3-for-3 off the bench for the Wolverines, and claimed the only two hits off of GCU starter Emily Darwin. Hawker extended her reached-base streak to 12 games with a walk and a double on a 1-for-3 afternoon.
The Wolverines will play a pair of local midweek games before traveling to Southern California. Utah Valley will travel down University Parkway to face BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. MDT, before hosting Big Sky foe Idaho State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. MDT. The Wolverines will then travel to Riverside, Calif. to face California Baptist on Friday and Saturday.
