OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University is set to have 10 student-athletes compete at this week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento. The event gets underway with the first day of the men's competition on Wednesday.
The Wolverines will have two student-athletes vying for return trips to the NCAA Championships in All-Americans
Everlyn Kemboi (10k) and
Aaron Johnson (long jump). Kemboi will attempt a rare feat of competing in the 1,500-meter, 10,000-meter, and 5,000-meter races. The 1,500 and 10k will both be held on Thursday evening.
Johnson, the WAC Outdoor champion, will bid for his second trip to nationals in the long jump (6:30 p.m. PT) on Wednesday, with
Nick Forsyth (javelin, 1:30 p.m. PT),
Noah Peterson (pole vault, 6 p.m. PT), and
Habtamu Cheney (10k, 9:10 p.m. PT) also competing the same day. Cheney swept the 5k and 10k at the WAC Championships while earning the High Point and Outstanding Track Performer awards.
Kelsi Oldroyd will participate in both events she qualified for on Thursday's opening day of the women's competition. The WAC outdoor champion in the javelin, Oldroyd will throw in that event in the afternoon (1:30 p.m. PT) before the long jump at 6 p.m. PT.
Kemboi is slated for the 1,500 at 6:30 p.m. PT before both she and
Mazzie Melaney Preston will race in the 10k at 9:10 p.m. Kemboi is ranked third in the country in the 10k and won both the 5k and 10k at the WAC Championships. Melaney Preston was second in the 10k and third in the 5k at the WAC Championships.
Aiden Garnett and
Seth Krauss will both vie for a trip to the NCAA Championships in the high jump on Friday afternoon, which gets underway at 2:30 p.m. PT.
Joel Mendez will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at 5:40 p.m. PT.
Saturday's final day of competition will see both Kemboi and Melaney Preston run in the 5k, which is slated to start at 8:10 p.m. PT. Kemboi is the national leader in the 5k and also won the WAC Championship while breaking her own meet record in the process.
