OREM—Utah Valley head coach Todd Phillips has announced that BYU guard Tanner Toolson has transferred to Utah Valley and will play for the Wolverines this upcoming season.
 
"I'm really excited about the addition of Tanner," said Phillips. "He's a big guard who can really shoot the ball. I have a long history with the Toolson family. I won an NJCAA National Championship with his brother, Conner, at Salt Lake Community College. We expect big things from Tanner. He is an efficient three-level scorer who has deep range. I believe Tanner will thrive at UVU."
 
Toolson, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard, played his freshman season at BYU where he appeared in six games. He averaged 3.5 points in his six games while shooting 44.4 percent from the field. He scored a season-high 10 points in a win over Western Oregon and added seven more in a win against Westminster.
 
The Vancouver, Washington native prepped at Union High School where he was named the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Mr. Basketball. He averaged 23.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game during his senior season. Toolson holds the UHS record for points, made threes, assists, steals, and field goals made during his career. He earned All-4A Greater St. Helens League First Team honors. 
 
Toolson joins a trio of family members that have played basketball at Utah Valley. Tanner's brother, Conner Toolson, played at UVU from 2016-2019. His cousin, Ryan Toolson, played for the Wolverines (2003-04, 06-09) as did his cousin, Jake Toolson, from 2017-19. Tanner's father, Andy, enjoyed a 10-year professional career that included a pair of seasons with the Utah Jazz.
 
Toolson will join the Wolverines for the 2023-24 season.
