OREM, Utah – Utah Valley women's volleyball fell on Thursday night 3-0 to Stephen F. Austin inside Lockhart Arena. SFA (14-3, 3-0) was led by reigning WAC Player of the Week Izabella Ortiz, who finished 12 kills and seven blocks.
Tori Ellis led UVU (4-10, 1-2) with eight kills, while
Avery Shewell and
Kalea Kennedy chipped in six.
The Wolverines used a 4-0 run to get their first lead of the match at 4-3 after two kills, a block assist, and a service ace. UVU used a second four-point spurt later to go up 11-8 while forcing an SFA timeout after a service ace from
Madi Standifird before the momentum swung in the Ladyjacks favor, and after an attack error put made it 16-14 UVU before SFA ended the opening set on a 12-2 run.
The Wolverines broke a 4-4 tie with a 4-0 run that featured a kill from
Vittoria Price before
Hailey Cuff added her second service ace of the contest. UVU looked to take control of the second set after taking a 10-5 lead following a kill from Shewell and two errors from SFA. The Ladyjacks had a 7-2 run to put them in front 19-18 in the second set. The Wolverines had kills from seniors Ellis and Cluff and tied the set at 20 before a 5-1 run ended the set in favor of the Jacks.
In the third set, UVU took advantage of five SFA errors to take a 5-2 early lead before SFA stormed back to take an 11-7 lead and continued to pull away from the Wolverines to secure the win. Cuff had three kills in the final set for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley will play inside Lockhart Arena on Saturday, Sept. 30, against UT Arlington at 1:00 p.m. MT. Following the match on Saturday, they won't play again until Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. MT against UTRGV.
