Utah Valley continues WAC road play at UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday

UTAH VALLEY CONTINUES WAC ROAD PLAY AT UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY
  • Utah Valley continues WAC road play in The Lone Star State at UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday night at UTRGV Fieldhouse in Edinburg, Texas. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. (MT)
     
  • Trevin Dorius recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double and Drake Allen scored a team-best 16 points to lead Utah Valley to an 83-69 road loss to UT Arlington on Thursday night at College Park Center. Utah Valley rallied from a second half 26-point deficit with 11 minutes to play to cut the UT Arlington lead to 10 points, 74-64, with 1:40 to play, but couldn't get any closer as the Mavericks secured the 83-69 win.
     
  • Caleb Stone-Carrawell scored 17 points to lead three other Wolverines in double figures in an 80-62 win over in-state foe Southern Utah on Jan. 6 at the UCCU Center. Drake Allen scored his 16 points  and was just one assist shy of a double-double with nine dimes. Trevin Dorius was just one rebound shy of a second straight double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
     
  • Utah Valley's three-point streak came to an end on Jan. 4 as the Wolverines went 0 for 8 from long range in the 65-58 win over California Baptist. Utah Valley had knocked down a three-point field goal in 266 straight games. UVU has made just six three-pointers over its last four games.
     
  • Utah Valley has suffered just two losses over the last two seasons in the comfy confines of the UCCU Center. The Wolverines have won 23 of their last 25 games at home.
     
  • Utah Valley is only one of six teams in the nation that returned players with a total of zero starts from the 2022-23 season. UVU has 11 new players this season, including seven transfers. The only returning players that saw time last season are Jaden McClanahan and Ethan Potter and neither started a game last season.

BROADCAST INFORMATION
Saturday night's game at UT Rio Grande Valley will be broadcast live on ESPN+, which is available on the ESPN app and on ESPNplus.com. Jonah Goldberg will be on the call with Bryan Smith for the ESPN+ broadcast. The game will also be broadcast over the air waves in Utah County with Jim McCulloch on the call. The radio broadcast will be aired live on ESPN 960 AM radio with a live stream available at ESPN960sports.com.  Brice Larson will host the pregame/halftime/postgame show for the game on ESPN 960 AM. 

ABOUT UTRGV
UTRGV enters Saturday night's game with a 5-11 overall record and a 1-4 mark in WAC play. The Vaqueros hold a 4-3 record at home this season. The team picked up an 81-80 overtime win over Seattle U on Thursday night at UTRGV Fieldhouse. Junior guard Hasan Abdul-Hakim hit a game-winning jumper with one second left in overtime to lift UTRGV to the win over the Redhawks. Senior forward Ahren Freeman led the Vaqueros with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season in the win over SU. Freshman guard J.J. Howard scored 14 points, while senior forward Daylen Williams added 12 points with five rebounds. Abdul-Hakim leads the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game followed by junior guard Elijah Elliott at 14.4 points a contest. Freeman also averages double figures at 12.3 points a game. Freeman leads the team on the boards, pulling down 6.2 rebounds a game. As a team, UTRGV averages 75.38 points per game while allowing opponents an 80.31 points per game average. 

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE VAQUEROS
Utah Valley and UTRGV will meet for just the 35th time on the basketball hardwood on Saturday. The Wolverines hold an all-time 30-4 advantage in the series. UVU has won four straight over the Vaqueros, including a 75-61 win over UTRGV in the last meeting between the two teams on Jan. 7, 2023 in Edinburg. UVU holds an all-time 12-3 record against UTRGV in Edinburg.

Le'Tre Darthard scored a game-high 19 points and Aziz Bandaogo recorded a double-double with a career-high 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead Utah Valley to a 75-61 road win at UT Rio Grande Valley on Jan. 7, 2023 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

DOUBLE DOUBLE ANIMAL STYLE
Trevin Dorius recorded his second double-double of the season on Thursday night against UT Arlington with 14 points and 10 rebounds. It is his second double-double of the season and the second double-double in his last three games as he also had a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double in a 65-58 win over California Baptist on Jan. 4. He now has two double-doubles in five WAC games this season.
