OREM, Utah – Utah Valley wrestling fell on Saturday night to Wyoming 22-12 inside the Lockhart Arena. The Wolverines (1-3, 0-3) benefited from victories from No. 19
Evan Bockman at 197 pounds. He earned his third consecutive win over a ranked opponent. It was Wyoming's (5-5, 3-3) early run of victories that helped clinch the dual.
"There were some things tonight that were good and showed that we've been working on lately. We didn't continue to do those things in the third period, and that hurt us in several matches. We will continue to work on those things as we prepare for the upcoming duals," said UVU head coach
Greg Williams.
Wyoming won the evening's first two matches with a bonus point victories from 125-pounder No. 4 Jore Volk with a tech fall in 5:53 and then Garrett Ricks picked up a 15-6 major decision at 133.
The Wolverines narrowed the gap with their first of four victories after
Haiden Drury took a 1-0 lead in the second period on an escape after him and No. 31 Cole Brooks wrestled to a scoreless tie after one period. The two battled through a scoreless third period, but Drury had secured riding time for a 2-0 decision.
Wyoming built a comfortable lead with victories at 149 and 157 to put them in front 19-3.
Jaxon Garoutte built an early lead in the first period, scoring on an escape, takedown, and near fall to lead 6-3 after one. Cooper Vorhees (Wyoming) mounted a comeback in the third period with an escape and a takedown for a 12-10 win.
After a 3-2 loss by
Caleb Uhlenhopp at 174, the Wolverines looked to chip into the Cowboy lead.
Mahonri Rushton used a reversal and a takedown to take a 5-4 lead after the opening period. The score held up until the third period when he added an escape, takedown, and secured riding time for a 10-4 win.
No. 19 Bockman took a 1-0 lead in the second period on an escape before Wyoming freshman Joey Novak tied the bout at 1-1 late with an escape of his own to force sudden death. In the extra time, the two-time NCAA qualifier scored an electric takedown, bringing the crowd to their feet for a 4-1 victory.
The Wolverines still trailed 22-9 heading into the evening's last match as
Chase Trussell picked up an 8-3 win. He broke a scoreless tie in the second period with an escape and a takedown to go up 4-0 before Mason Ding (Wyoming) scored two on a reversal, but it was the UVU senior who captured the match by adding an escape and one final third-period takedown for an 8-3 win.
The Wolverines have next week off before hosting North Dakota State on Feb. 2 and No. 10 South Dakota State on Feb. 3. Both duals are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. MT inside Lockhart Arena.
