Utah Valley picks up 65-58 win over California Baptist in return to WAC play

OREM—Drake Allen scored a team-high 17 points and Trevin Dorius recorded a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double to lead Utah Valley to a 65-58 win over WAC foe California Baptist on Thursday night at the UCCU Center.

Utah Valley improves to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in league play. California Baptist falls to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in WAC play.

"I'm really proud of our guys," said Utah Valley head coach Todd Phillips. "We really defended well and protected the paint. We won it 38-18 in the pain which is really good. We were plus 15 on the rebound margin. We've really worked hard on preaching the offensive rebounding in practice. The free throw shooting was really big for us tonight, knocking down 23 of 29 from the line."

Allen scored his 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field and a 7 of 8 mark from the free throw line. The junior guard also pulled down three rebounds with two assists and three steals.

Dorius recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Dorius knocked down 3 of 6 shots from the field and connected on 6 of 9 shots from the free throw line. He also dished out five assists with one block and a steal.

Jaden McClanahan was also in double figures with 10 points, connecting on 4 of 7 shots. McClanahan also had five rebounds on the night.

Osiris Grady had nine points and Caleb Stone-Carrawell added eight points, while Tanner Toolson helped with five. Nate Tshimanga pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds with four points and three assists.

As a team, Utah Valley shot 42% (21-50) from the floor. The Wolverines did not connect on a three-point field goal, going 0 of 8 from long range. It marks the first time since Feb. 7, 2005 at Seattle that the team has not connected on a three in a game. UVU had made a three-point field goal in 266 straight games prior to tonight's game.

Utah Valley held California Baptist to a season-low 58 points and a 34.5% (20-58) mark from the field, including a 33.3% (8-24) clip from three-point range. UVU outrebounded the Lancers 45-30. UVU went 23 for 29 from the free throw line for a 79.3% clip.

Utah Valley will continue WAC play at home on Saturday as the Wolverines host in-state foe Southern Utah at the UCCU Center. Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and over the air waves on ESPN 960 AM radio.
