EDINBURG, Texas — Omar Yehya scored his 10th goal of the season, moving into a tie for third in the nation in goals scored, to lead Utah Valley to a 1-1 draw on the road at UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday night.
With his goal, Yehya also became just the second Wolverine in program history to score double-digit goals in a single season, joining 2019 WAC Offensive Player of the Year Blake Frischknecht who scored a team record 13.
The two sides were nearly inseparable most of the night, with both sides putting up equal numbers of shots (8) and shots on goal (3).
After withstanding Vaquero pressure for most of the opening 30 minutes, Utah Valley broke through on a counter in the 39th minute with Yehya's goal. After the ball pinballed around the 18, Trevor Walk wound up looking to blast a long-range volley on goal, but instead sent a pinpoint through ball to Yehya, who tapped it in.
Utah Valley had the majority of possession in the second half, but were unable to find the second goal that would've alleviated some of the tension. That tension reached a breaking point when the Vaqueros were awarded and converted a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
The Wolverines had a flurry of chances in the 87th, but were unable to put any of them away. Walk and Alex Fritcher both saw their shots saved in a scramble in front of the net.
Utah Valley will continue its road trip in Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday with a showdown against the Grand Canyon Lopes. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. MDT, and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
