Box Score OREM, Utah – Utah Valley fell on Thursday night to Utah Tech, 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 23-25) inside Lockhart Arena.
Avery Shewell finished with 12 kills, and
Evalyn Chism recorded her seventh double-double of the season for UVU (10-5, 1-2). Kennedi Knudsen led the Trailblazers (9-4, 3-0) with 12 kills, five blocks, and seven digs.
Utah Tech used a 9-3 run in the opening set to break an 8-8 tie and win the opening set. A balanced offensive attack in the set kept the UVU defense off-balance. Shewell provided an offensive spark for the Wolverines with four kills and
Bella Wooden had three block assists as she reached ten blocks for the second consecutive match.
The Wolverines led 9-6 in the second set before
Sami Blackett scored three points with a kill and back-to-back service aces to make it 12-8. They pushed their lead out to 14-9 after a kill from
Eliza Hakes. Utah Tech came back with an 8-1 run to regain the lead 19-16.
Molly Cummard entered the match to serve as UVU trailed 19-17; she held the serve for four points, including a service ace to tie the set up at 19-19. The Trailblazers responded with a 6-1 run to win the second set.
Shewell inched closer to 100 career services in the third set with an ace to put the Wolverines in front 5-4. Middle
Maranda Woolf tallied one of her four total kills in the third set before she and Blackett stuffed Utah Tech's Hannah Howard to push the lead out to 10-6. The final two of Woolf's kills came later in the set to make it 20-15. The Trailblazers finished the match on a 9-2 scoring run to secure the win.
With her two service aces tonight, Shewell is now tied for ninth all-time with Sierra Starley with 94 career service aces. She needs six to become the eighth player to 100 career service aces.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1:00 p.m. MT against Grand Canyon. They will have some time off before playing on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Noon MT against Tarleton State.
