Wolverines Headline WAC Postseason Awards

ARLINGTON, Texas— Utah Valley women's soccer dominated the 2024 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) postseason awards, with senior Faith Webber named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, senior defender Haley Funn honored as Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and freshman standout Kate Shirts recognized as WAC Freshman of the Year. Head coach Chris Lemay also earned WAC Coach of the Year accolades for the second time in his career. The awards highlight a remarkable season for the Wolverines, who secured their third consecutive WAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming WAC Tournament.

Utah Valley earned a total of 10 All-WAC selections across First Team, Second Team, and the All-Freshman Team. Webber, Funn, Ruby Hladek, and Manthy Brady earned First Team honors, while Nixan Jackson, Shirts, and Taylor Nelson were named to the Second Team. Three freshmen—Shirts, Sarah Oyler, and Cortney Cobabe—earned spots on the All-WAC Freshman Team.

Webber, who also earned her third consecutive First Team All-WAC selection, becomes just the second UVU player in program history to be named WAC Offensive Player of the Year, joining former Wolverine Heather Stainbrook (2022). The Grand Blanc, Michigan native shattered her own school record with 18 goals this season, leading the nation in goals, goals per game (1.00), shots per game (6.11), and shots on goal per game (3.11). Her performance led Utah Valley to a historic season, as she reached career milestones with a program-record 48 goals and 109 points. Webber's contributions were pivotal to UVU's success, as she netted four game-winning goals and was named WAC Player of the Week four times.

Funn, from Great Falls, Virginia, earned First Team All-WAC honors alongside her Co-Defensive Player of the Year award, becomes the seventh player in UVU history to earn the defensive accolade, joining a distinguished list of Wolverines who have claimed the honor. The senior defender anchored a Utah Valley backline that recorded five shutouts, limiting opponents to just nine shots per game during WAC play. Funn also contributed offensively with two goals and two assists, showing her versatility on both ends of the field.

Shirts, who earned Second Team All-WAC and All-WAC Freshman Team honors, made a strong debut for UVU and was named WAC Freshman of the Year. The Orem, Utah native played in all 18 games this season, contributing eight assists—ranking second in the WAC and 20th nationally. Shirts scored her first career goal in a 4-1 win over Abilene Christian on Oct. 12. She becomes only the third Wolverine to earn the WAC Freshman of the Year award.

Lemay, in his eighth season at the helm, earned WAC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his leadership, UVU has captured four WAC regular season titles, two WAC tournament titles, and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's first NCAA Tournament win. He led UVU to an impressive 12-4-2 overall record and a nearly flawless 6-0-1 mark in WAC play. He has led UVU to a 22-game unbeaten streak in WAC regular season play. His team is currently riding a 10-game unbeaten streak that included a stretch of nine straight wins.

Hladek, a First Team All-WAC selection from Ladera Ranch, California, led the WAC with 10 assists this season, which ranks her fifth nationally. She is close to setting a new school record, needing just three more to break UVU's single season assist record of 12. Hladek, who also has four goals, ranks second on the team with 42 points and second in shots with 42. Her impressive six-point game, featuring two goals and two assists, helped UVU secure a 5-2 road victory at Detroit Mercy earlier this season.

Brady, a First Team All-WAC selection and senior midfielder from Lindon, Utah, has been a consistent playmaker for UVU with two goals and six assists, starting in all 18 matches. Tied for fifth on the team with 10 points, Brady scored the game-winning goal in a 3-0 win at Southern Utah on Oct. 6. Brady has 22 shots this season with 11 on frame.

Jackson, a Second Team All-WAC pick from Mapleton, Utah, has been a standout starter in 17 of 18 games. She is tied for second on the team with four goals and ranks second on the squad with seven assists. Her 15 points are third on the team, supported by 48 shots, including 17 on goal. Jackson delivered an outstanding two-goal performance in UVU's 5-0 shutout of Weber State, including the game-winner.

Nelson, a Second Team All-WAC honoree, played a crucial role in the UVU defense this season, contributing to five shutouts. The senior defender also made an impact on offense, scoring the game-winning goal in the Wolverines' 4-1 win over Abilene Christian on Oct. 12.

Oyler, an All-WAC Freshman Team honoree and freshman forward from Provo, Utah, appeared in 14 games, scoring two goals, including a game-winner in a 4-2 road win at San Diego State. Oyler also scored in UVU's 4-3 win at Utah Tech and has taken nine shots, with two on goal this year.

Cobabe, an All-WAC Freshman Team selection and a consistent starter from Syracuse, Utah, has played in all 18 games. She has scored twice this season, netting goals in wins over San Diego State and Southern Utah. Cobabe assisted on the game-tying goal that clinched UVU's outright WAC title in a match at Seattle U on Oct. 26.

Utah Valley will enter the WAC Tournament as the top seed, aiming to keep its unbeaten streak alive and earn an NCAA Tournament bid. The Wolverines received a first-round bye and will play the winner of No. 4 California Baptist/No. 5 Tarleton State in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Abilene, Texas. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
