OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University's
Anna Martin and
Mo Guled both captured individual conference titles and the Wolverine women won their second straight WAC Cross Country Championship with a perfect score on Friday morning at Lakeside Park.
The UVU women won their fifth WAC title overall after having the top six finishers in the race. The Wolverines became just the second team in WAC Cross Country women's history to obtain a perfect score of 15 points. The only team to do it prior was the 2019 California Baptist squad.
Martin and the other Wolverine women had control of the race throughout as she captured the 6k title in 19:51.49 in the 6k.
Ari Trimble, who was the runner-up last season as she led UVU to the title, again finished second with a time of 20:00.10.
"We were working together for the majority of the race… and that was super awesome," Martin said after the win. "I feel like we were all helping each other and lifting each other up, and it was great to be here on our home turf."
Caila Odekirk (20:07.09) finished third, followed by
Oakley Olson (20:22.92) and
Julie Sumsion (20:25.60) to round out the scoring.
Allie Warner crossed the line in sixth in 20:27.90 to give Utah Valley the first six first-team All-WAC recipients. Two more Wolverine runners earned second-team All-WAC: Liz Zwahlen (11th, 20:49.30) and
Kate Giles (18th, 21:28.51).
"They've done a really good job all year long of working together and helping each other and our number one has switched out a little, so I knew we'd run as a group but I didn't know that we'd end up with a perfect score," said head coach
Scott Houle.
Guled's win was his fifth individual title of the season and led UVU's men to a third-place finish as a team. Guled ran the 8k in 23:07.08, finishing over nine seconds in front of Southern Utah's Santiago Gaitan, the runner-up.
California Baptist, ranked No. 14 in the nation, won its fifth straight team title with Guled's victory ending a streak of four straight individual winners from the Lancers. Utah Valley's men had three other runners earn second-team All-WAC honors in
Austin Hone (13th, 23:57.13),
Gilbert Olivas (14th, 24:01.60), and
Wyatt Mortenson (18, 24:08.41).
Martin's win marks the third time a UVU woman has won the individual WAC Championships while Guled's victory is the fourth time the Wolverine men have had the WAC winner.
Next up for Utah Valley will be the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 15 in Reno, Nevada.
