Throwers have big opening day at BYU December Invite

PROVO, Utah — Utah Valley University's throwers had a big afternoon on day one of the indoor track & field season while competing at the BYU December Invitational. Four school records fell with 16 top-10 marks. 
 
Alyssa Logan broke her own indoor record in the weight throw, hitting 17.37 meters, while Karsten Deakin took over the No. 9 spot with a throw of 15.88 meters. Logan's PR also put her in second overall at the meet.
 
In her collegiate debut, true freshman Grace Degarimore broke the school's indoor discus record by more than five meters, hitting 48.42 with her best throw. That mark landed her in second at the meet, while Deakin also moved into third in the discus with a throw of 41.71 meters.
 
Degarimore also recorded the sixth-best top 10 mark in the shot put, hitting 13.33 meters, and Deakin landed the No. 10 mark in the shot put (12.96m), giving her three PRs on Tuesday.
 
Trevor Hill was one of four new entries in the top 10 for the discus as the true freshman set the program record with a throw of 47.19 meters. Redshirt freshman Rodney Minette hit 44.83 meters, putting him in fourth, while Luis Diaz Bojorquez (45.54m) is now No. 6, and Clackamas CC transfer Andrew Turner landed in seventh with a throw of 40.60 meters.
 
Eddie Garcia's throw of 16.09 meters in the men's shot put lands him at No. 6, while Idaho State transfer Payton Vernon is No. 8 after throwing 15.19 meters.
 
Isaiah Archer and Max Clemons also established the top two spots in the record book in the men's 600-meter run. Archer finished in 1:20.51 with Clemons right behind, in 1:21.27.
 
In the multis, Anaya Potter was third overall in the pentathlon, accumulating 3,026 points. Alina Lurth, who finished fifth in the pentathlon, was the top finisher in the shot put, hitting 11.89 meters on the first day of her college career. With four of the seven events in the men's heptathlon complete, redshirt freshman Cole Johnson and junior Matt Biggins are fifth and sixth, respectively.
 
The meet continues with an abbreviated schedule on Wednesday with the conclusion of the heptathlon, the high jump, long jump, and pole vault.
