OREM, Utah — Utah Valley sophomore forward Carter Welling has been named the University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, following his performance in three games last week.
 
Welling earns the honor after recording a pair of double-doubles at the Samford Thanksgiving Invitational last week. Over the three games at the event, he averaged 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game while shooting an impressive 53.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. 
 
He recorded a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double in a 77-74 win over West Georgia. He followed that up with 14 points and 10 rebounds on the road against Samford and closed out the week with a 15-point effort against North Dakota State.
 
Utah Valley now turns its attention to a first-ever matchup against Stanford on Tuesday night at Maples Pavilion. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and the Wolverine Sports Network.
