ARLINGTON, Texas — Utah Valley sophomore forward
Carter Welling has been named the University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men's Basketball Player and Newcomer of the Week for his outstanding performances in a pair of road victories last week, the league office announced Monday.
Welling was dominant on both ends of the floor, averaging 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 assists per game in wins over Idaho State and Weber State. He shot an impressive 68% (17-of-25) from the field and 55.6% (5-of-9) from beyond the arc in the two games.
The junior forward had a career night in Utah Valley's 70-56 road win over Idaho State on Dec. 18, scoring a career-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks. He followed it up with another stellar performance in a thrilling 64-62 road win over in-state rival Weber State on Dec. 21, scoring 22 points, pulling down six rebounds, and matching a career-high with five blocks. Welling knocked down four three-pointers in the win to help the Wolverines secure their second consecutive road victory.
Welling's performances helped the Wolverines improve to 7-6 on the season. It is his first WAC Player of the Week honor of the season and his second WAC Newcomer of the Week selection.
Utah Valley will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 28, hosting Bethesda at the UCCU Center to close out non-conference play. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
