Barraclough takes third at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

12/7/2024 8:18:00 PM

LAS VEGAS – Utah Valley's No. 4 Terrell Barraclough finished his run at the 42nd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitation on Saturday. He finished 3-0 on the day and took home third place in the 165-pound weight class.

"Terrell is a stud! To lose his first match of the best in-season tournament of the year and rebound with six straight wins, including several national-ranked victories to finish third, speaks volumes of his resiliency," said UVU head coach Adam Hall. "He will continue to get better and refine his craft, which will also improve our team. I'm very proud of his effort and will to win this weekend."

After losing his first-round match yesterday to No. 28 Jack Thomsen (Northern Iowa), he ran the table the rest of the way, winning his next six matches, with five coming against ranked foes. Overall, nine of his 15 victories have come against opponents who hold national rankings.

Barraclough used a first-period takedown in the final minute to take a 3-0 lead over Michigan freshman and No. 12 Brock Mantanona before adding a second-period escape to go up 4-0. In the final period, Mantanona scored on an escape and tried for a last-minute escape to tie the bout, but the attempt fell short for a 4-1 decision for Barraclough.

In the consolation semifinals, Barraclough faced off against No. 6 Hunter Garvin (Stanford) in a rematch of the opening night contest, in which UVU's redshirt senior topped the Cardinal's talented sophomore. After the high-scoring 11-9 score in Palo Alto, this time around, it was a hard-fought affair that saw Barraclough take an early 1-0 lead after Garvin was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. He added an escape in the second period to go up 2-0 and won by a 3-0 decision after riding time to earn a spot in the third-place bout.

In the third-place match against No. 11 Bubba Wilson (Nebraska), after a scoreless first period, Barraclough took a 1-0 lead on an escape seven seconds into the second period. He held on for the 1-0 decision for his second win over Wilson after winning by a major decision in Lincoln during the UVU and Nebraska dual.

Barraclough and the Wolverines return to action on Friday, Dec. 20, against No. 23 Oregon State at 7:00 p.m. MT inside Lockhart Arena. This will be the last non-conference dual of the regular season.
