No. 18 Northern Colorado tops Utah Valley in Greeley

GREELEY, Colo. – Utah Valley University wrestling fell on Saturday night to the University of Northern Colorado, 22-15, inside the Bank of Colorado Arena. Utah Valley (2-6, 1-6) won five of the night's ten matches, but it was the bonus point victories that put Northern Colorado (9-5, 2-4) over the top.

"We split 5-5 just as we did last night but lost again on bonus points. As a team we have to do a better job, both in not giving up extra points and creating more opportunities to score more when we are ahead," said UVU head Coach Greg Williams.

Coach Williams continued, "Chase did a great job of wrestling one point at a time to come back from a 6-1 deficit in the third period. Jax also kept wrestling to score in his match but didn't get the call at the end for what seemed to be a fairly obvious takedown, which would have forced overtime. Overall, we feel many of our guys showed some progression this week. We know we still have more to improve on this last month."

The Wolverines fell into an early 10-0 deficit after No. 8 Stevo Poulin pinned Yusief Lillie in the 125-pound bout, and Kase Mauger fell to No. 15 Dominick Serrano by a major decision.

Utah Valley got on the board with the fifth consecutive win by No. 27 Haiden Drury after a 5-2 decision over Rudy Lopez. The two wrestled to a scoreless tie after the first period before Drury took control with a four-point second period, scoring on an escape and a takedown. He added his final point of the bout with the riding time advantage.

Isaiah Delgado won his second match of the weekend with an 8-6 action-filled bout. Benji Alanis took a 3-1 lead after the first period. The tide turned in Delgado's favor in the second as he scored on an escape, a penalty point, and secured a takedown to end the period in front 6-3.

UNC added to their lead with a pin by No. 2 Zerban at 157. Jaxon Garoutte trailed a 4-0 heading into the third period and scored on a reversal to make it 4-2; he kept battling and looked for a critical takedown to force overtime but fell short 5-2. Travis Mastrogiovanni won the 174-pound match 4-2 over Caleb Uhlenhopp.

Armstrong trailed 1-0 in the second period of the 184-pound match before taking his first lead with a takedown. He secured the match by adding a third-period escape. The victory improved his season record to 12-5 and is now 3-1 in duals.

The night's final two matches both went into sudden victory or beyond. No. 16 Evan Bockman trailed Xavier Doolin 1-0 heading into the third period, and with choice, chose bottom. He tied the match in the third with an escape to force sudden victory. The match would come down to riding time in the second and third overtime periods, where Bockman held on for the 3-2 decision.

UNC's Xavier Doolin took a 6-1 lead into the third period before Chase Trussell's rally started with a takedown to cut the lead to 6-4. He trailed later in the period 8-4 but came back with an escape and a second takedown to tie the bout at 8-8. In sudden victory, Trussell picked up the win with a takedown.

The Wolverines will have their final dual of the season on Feb. 24 against California Baptist at 11:00 a.m. MT inside Lockhart Arena. UVU will honor Ty Smith, Jayden Woodruff, Jacob Armstrong, Chase Trussell, Hunter Morse, Isaiah Delgado, Kobe Nelms, and Cameron Haddock before the match.
