Utah Valley defeats Stephen F. Austin, 71-62, for fifth straight win

OREMEthan Potter scored 17 points with nine rebounds and Caleb Stone-Carrawell came off the bench to score 14 to lead Utah Valley to a 71-62 win over Stephen F. Austin at the UCCU Center. 
 
Utah Valley extends its win streak to five games and improves to 14-14 overall and 9-8 in WAC play. SFA falls to 14-13 overall and 7-9 in league play.
 
"I'm really proud of our guys," said Utah Valley head coach Todd Phillips. "SFA is a really good team and pose a ton of problems defensively. I thought the guys did a good job of handling the pressure. It was a great battle for our guys."
 
Potter scored his 17 points on an 8 of 11 clip from the field and a 1 of 1 mark from the free throw line. He also pulled down nine rebounds with a pair of blocks. Stone-Carrawell connected on 5 of 6 shots from the floor, including three shots from long range for his 14 points. He also tallied three rebounds with one steal. 
 
Drake Allen and Trevin Dorius were also in double figures with 10 points each. Jaden McClanahan dished out a career-best 11 assists—the fifth most ever recorded in a single game in UVU history. McClanahan also had five points and two steals. 
 
Utah Valley shot 58.3% (28-48) from the field with a 53.8% (7-13) mark from long range. SFA shot 38.9% (21-54) from the floor with a 33.3% (8-24) clip from beyond the arc. UVU outscored SFA 36-14 in the paint and got 22 points from its bench compared to SFA's 11. 
 
Utah Valley will now wrap up play at home on Saturday, March 2 against UT Arlington. Tip-off at the UCCU Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. Prior to Saturday's game against UTA, Utah Valley will honor seniors Jaden McClanahan, Trevin Dorius, and Cache Fields.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Utah Valley jumped out to a 6-0 lead capped off by a Allen fast break slam through the first two minutes of the game. Five straight Tanner Toolson points, including a shot from long range, extended the UVU lead to 11-3 with 16 minutes to go in the half. Leading 14-7, Stone-Carrawell hit a pair of threes and Osiris Grady threw down a dunk to give the Wolverines a 12-point, 19-7, lead with 10:53 on the clock. SFA then used an 8-0 run over the next 3:16 to cut the UVU lead to just four points, 19-15, with 7:40 to go. SFA cut the lead to three points, 23-20, with 5:34 to play in the half, but UVU responded right back with a 14-4 run over the next 5:34 to take a 37-24 lead into halftime. 
 
Second Half
The two teams played evenly through the first nine minutes of the second half with the Wolverines holding on to a 12-point, 54-42, lead with 11 minutes to play. The Jacks then scored six of the next nine points to cut the UVU lead to nine points, 57-48, with 7:24 on the clock. UVU held on to the nine-point lead, 60-51, with six minutes to play and then outscored SFA 6-3 over the next 2:48 culminating in a McClanahan behind-the-back pass to Dorius for a dunk to extend the lead to 12 points, 66-54, with three minutes on the clock. SFA outscored UVU 8-5 the rest of the way but the Wolverines held on to secure the 71-62 win.
