PHOENIX — Utah Valley University had a lead entering the final quarter of play, but a big fourth quarter helped Grand Canyon University to a 66-52 win on Saturday afternoon in the Valley of the Sun.
The Wolverines (8-12, 3-8) outscored the Lopes (19-4, 11-1) in the third by 12, 20-8, to turn a 30-22 halftime deficit into a 40-36 lead after three. GCU used a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter to turn a 44-38 Utah Valley lead into a 52-46 advantage. Grand Canyon outscored the Wolverines in the fourth, 28-10.
Kylee Mabry led UVU with 14 points while
Amanda Barcello scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Eleyana Tafisi added nine points and five assists for the Wolverines. Olivia Lane led four GCU players in double figures with 13 points. Jada Holland added 12, Trinity San Antonio finished with 11 and
Shay Fano scored all 10 of her points in the opening half.
Grand Canyon outrebounded Utah Valley 40-24 and turned 17 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points. In the fourth quarter, the Lopes had 11 points after securing offensive rebounds.
Down eight at the half, the Wolverines came out of the break and forced eight GCU turnovers in the third en route to outscoring the Lopes 20-8 to take a 42-38 lead into the fourth.
UVU trailed 32-22 when Mabry scored five straight points to cut the lead in half. GCU led 36-29 midway through the third when Barcello led the Wolverines on a 9-0 run that gave Utah Valley a 40-36 lead. 13 of Utah Valley's 20 points in the third came off a Grand Canyon turnover with Barcello scoring nine in the quarter.
The Wolverines took their biggest lead of the game when Barcello opened the fourth with a bucket to make it 44-38. The Lopes quickly trimmed it back to one after Lane scored and Holland hit a three.
It was 46-45 when GCU scored five points on one possession to regain control of the game. Tiarra Brown scored and was fouled and missed the free throw, but Lane corralled the offensive rebound and then scored and was fouled for a 3-point play to make it 50-46. The Lopes got another second-chance opportunity on the next possession and took advantage, capping a 9-0 run with a bucket from San Antonio.
Utah Valley continues the current three-game road swing next week in Texas where the Wolverines will play at Tarleton State next Thursday and at Abilene Christian on Saturday.
