PROVO, Utah — Megan Gibbs hit a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh to give Utah Valley a one-run lead, but a walk-off three-run home run by Maddie Bejarano gave the BYU Cougars a 9-7 win Monday afternoon at Gail Miller Field.
The Wolverines led 6-2 going to the bottom of the sixth, but the Cougars rallied for seven runs across the final two frames to steal the win.
UVU blitzed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as five of the first six batters reached base, with the lone out being a sacrifice bunt. Amber Rodriguez walked and Britney Moreno singled to set the table for Rachael Brown, who bunted them into scoring position. Angelique Mann brought them both home with a single down the left field line. Halle Morris capped off the rally with a single up the middle to plate Mann.
BYU put up their first two runs in the third courtesy of a pair of two-out doubles.
The Wolverines put up another three-spot in the fifth to extend the lead to four. Brown singled to start the rally and Morris reached on an error by the second baseman. Both were pinch ran for by Libbie Hawker and Taylor Wooten respectively. Hawker came in to score on a Gibbs single to left, then Peyton Hall brought Wooten and Gibbs in on a single to left-center.
Four walks aided the Cougars in their rally to tie the game in the sixth. Aiylana Agbayani had the big hit of the inning, a two-RBI double to left-center.
Gibbs restored the Wolverine lead with a solo home run to right-center, but BYU was able to put together a two-out rally to clinch the game. Morris retired the first two batters with groundouts to short, but surrendered a single and a walk before giving up the home run to Bejarano.
