Utah Valley heads to Cedar City for its final road WAC series of the season, taking on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in a three-game set this Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. MT, with Sunday's series finale slated for noon MT. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
This weekend's series is UVU's first at SUU since the Thunderbirds joined the WAC prior to the 2023 season. The Wolverines swept the series in Orem last year.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley topped the Weber State Wildcats, 9-1 in six innings in Ogden on Tuesday. The win secured the season series for the Wolverines, after splitting the first two meetings in Orem.
Payge Armendariz built upon her strong recent form with a complete game, her third straight in her last three starts. Armendariz allowed no earned runs and struck out one, and also picked up an RBI at the plate.
Megan Gibbs hit her 12th home run of the season — a grand slam at the heart of a five-run fourth inning — to lead the offense. With the grand slam, Gibbs set a new personal best for a single season in home runs (12) and RBIs (40). Gibbs also became the 13th Wolverine to reach 40 RBIs in a season.
Tuesday's win was Utah Valley's first road run rule win since 2021, when the Wolverines beat UC Santa Barbara 11-1. It was also UVU's second run rule win over the Wildcats this season after winning 11-3 back on March 8.
SERIES HISTORY VS SUU
Utah Valley is 19-14-1 all-time against the Thunderbirds, including a 3-0 mark as conference opponents. In last year's series in Orem, the Wolverines came from behind to win game one, 8-6, then clinched the sweep with a pair of run rule victories, 10-2 and 11-3.
Since 2012, UVU has dominated the series, going 15-4, but this weekend will be the first games in that time played on-campus at SUU.
UP NEXT
The Wolverines will play their final non-conference game of the season at Idaho State on May 1 before returning home for the final WAC series of the season against Utah Tech on May 3-4. All four games will be streamed on ESPN+.
