OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University's cross country teams competed Friday morning at the BYU Autumn Classic in a workout and tune-up for next week's Roy Griak Invitational.
Mo Guled led the UVU men with a fourth-place finish while
Oakley Olson was fifth on the women's side. Both runners again led the Wolverines, following up their finishes at the season-opening UVU Invitational where Guled was the winner and Olson the runner-up.
The Wolverine women, ranked 23rd in the first USTFCCCA Poll of the season, finished second as a team to host and No. 2 ranked BYU. After Olson's fifth-place finish,
Julie Sumsion was the next Utah Valley runner to cross the line, coming in eighth overall.
Caila Odekirk (11th),
Anna Martin (12th),
Ari Trimble (16th) also finished in the top 20 while
Kelsi Lindley,
Elisabeth Ferrell,
Liza Sybrowsky,
Emma Baugh,
Lyza Yetter, and
Allie Warner were all part of the top 30 for Utah Valley.
Guled's fourth-place finish on Friday helped the men's team take third overall in the 4-mile race. No. 2 BYU had the top two finishers—and four of the top seven—to win the team title. Behind Guled, the next Wolverine to cross the finish line was
Wyatt Mortenson in 22nd with both
Trey Despain and
Tate James also in the top 30. The race was somewhat of a preview of the WAC Championships, which will be hosted by UVU and held at Lakeside Park on Nov. 1. The course for the WAC Championships will be mapped to an 8k for the men and a 6k for the women.
Next week, Utah Valley will compete at the 38th annual Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. The races will be streamed on the B1G Network and RunnerSpace.
