OMAHA, Neb. – Three with connections to Utah Valley wrestling will take the mat this weekend at the USA Wrestling Senior World Team Trials. Demetrius Romero,
Isaiah Delgado, and UVU assistant coach Joey Lavallee will be in action during the event.
Lavallee was the highest connection on the list of pre-seeds, coming at No. 8 at 79kg, and will make his debut for Brunson UVRTC during this tournament. The former Missouri Tiger finished his career 114-29, including 29-0 in duals when Mizzou was in the Mid-American Conference. The 2017 NCAA All-American advanced to the national title match and was a finalist for the 2022 World Team Trials.
Romero was UVU's first Big 12 champion and one of five to claim the title of NCAA All-American while in the black and green. He will return to the stage this weekend as the No. 15 pre-seed in the tough 79kg bracket. The four-time NCAA qualifier earned All-American honors in 2021 with a sixth-place finish. He won two Big 12 titles while wrestling for the Wolverines.
Delgado finished the 2023 season as an NCAA qualifier after a seventh-place finish with a 3-2 record in the Big 12 championships. The El Paso, Texas native will enter this weekend's national competition as the No. 21 pre-seeded wrestler.
The pre-seeds can change until the brackets are announced following weigh-ins on Saturday morning. FloWrestling will release the brackets before the event starts on Saturday.
Fans can tune in via FloWrestling, and FloArena will have brackets updated throughout the event. The winners will earn a spot on Team USA for the World Championships on Oct. 28-31 in Tirana, Albania, in the non-Olympic weights.
