OREM, Utah — Utah Valley wrapped up non-conference play with a hotly contested 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Oregon State Beavers on Wednesday night at Clyde Field.
The Wolverines (5-2-2) and Beavers (4-2-2) were inseparable through the first 74 minutes until OSU's Fabian Straudi found the back of the net.
"We had better intensity and energy [than last game], but you have to do it for 90 minutes," said head coach Kyle Beckerman. "We had one defensive lapse and it cost us. We gotta finish better and be more brave, but the energy was there, and I was excited about that."
Utah Valley withstood a strong start from the Beavers, who had plenty of chances to open the scoring within the opening minutes. Ben Williams made his first of three saves in the 5th minute to deny OSU.
The Wolverines registered their only two shots on frame in the sixth and 16th minutes off the feet of Keith Willey and Omar Yehya respectively, but both were turned away.
After OSU took the lead in the 74th minute, Utah Valley had a few chances to get on level terms, but none were able to find the back of the net. In the 83rd minute, Ben Ortiz sent in an impressive volley from about 30 yards out, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Utah Valley had one last chance on a set piece just outside the box in the 90th minute, but Naime Odeh's shot went just wide left.
The Wolverines will have a week off to prepare for conference play, which begins on Oct. 3 at home against defending WAC champions Seattle U. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT, and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
