SALT LAKE CITY —
Faith Webber scored the game-winner in the 27th minute to lead Utah Valley to a 2-0 win over in-state rival and Big 12 foe Utah on Sunday night at Ute Field in Salt Lake City. The win marks the first-ever win over the Utes.
Utah Valley snapped a three-game skid and improved to 3-3-1 overall on the season. Utah dropped to 2-2-1 on the year.
"I'm really proud of the team," said Utah Valley head coach
Chris Lemay. "Coming off three losses, you have to have a certain mentality to continue showing up every day, learning from mistakes, and growing. Tonight's performance was very mature, and I'm really proud of the group. I think we can continue to build off of this. We're now 2-1-1 against our first four Power Five opponents, which is something to be happy about. I was pleased with our possession, the way we managed the game, and, of course, Faith scored a great one, and we got a little fortunate with the other."
Nixan Jackson received a ball outside the box on the right side of the pitch from the Utah keeper and sent a pass to
Faith Webber at the top of the box. Webber then fired a shot that deflected off the keeper and into the goal to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.
Manthy Brady sent a left-footed shot from about 30 yards out on the left side. The shot deflected off a pair of Utah defenders and into the goal to give Utah Valley a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Utah just edged UVU on shots, 11-10, and held a 5-2 advantage on shots on frame. Webber led the Wolverines with a match-high four shots, including one on frame. Brady,
Cortney Cobabe,
Nixan Jackson, and
Sadie Beardall each had one shot.
Leah Wolf played all 90 minutes in goal, recording five saves to pick up the win.
Utah Valley continues road play as the team travels to face UC Davis on Thursday, Sept. 12. UVU will then head to Spokane, Washington, to take on Gonzaga on Sunday, Sept. 15. UVU's next home game will be on Sept. 19 against Weber State.
