GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Utah Valley's Paxton Maxwell is tied for second and teammate Colby Hutchens is fourth after day one of the Nassau Intercollegiate, as the Wolverines sit fourth at 29-over-par 589 Monday at Nassau Country Club.
Rhode Island holds the lead after shooting a two-round 17-over-par 577 (283–294) on the opening day of the 12-team event.
Maxwell opened with a 1-under-par 69 and followed with a 73, totaling five birdies and 24 pars across his 36 holes. The sophomore is two shots behind Rhode Island's Aidan O'Donovan for the top spot heading into Tuesday's final round.
Hutchens sits one stroke behind Maxwell in fourth place at 3-over-par 143 (71–72). The junior carded seven birdies on the day, including four in round two.
"I'm really proud of how Paxton and Colby competed today," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. "They both managed the course well and gave us a chance to finish the fall on a high note. It's been great to see their growth and confidence build each tournament."
Andrew Hawk is tied for 41st after carding a two-round 12-over-par 152 (76–76). JJ Tomsick is tied for 50th at 14-over-par 154 (80–74), and Isaiah Ellis is tied for 57th at 16-over-par 156 (78–78).
