GLEN COVE, N.Y.—Utah Valley sophomore Paxton Maxwell fired an even-par 70 in Wednesday's final round to earn co-medalist honors at the Nassau Intercollegiate with a 2-over-par 212 (69–73–70), the first individual title of his collegiate career.
Maxwell finished atop the 66-player field alongside Navy's Jack Tarzy. The Wolverine sophomore's final round featured five birdies as he closed out a steady week at Nassau Country Club.
"Paxton's been trending all fall and today he showed great composure down the stretch," said Utah Valley head coach Chris Curran. "Colby was right there, too—one shot back with another really mature round. I'm proud of the way our guys competed, and this is a strong way to finish the fall as we build momentum for the spring."
Freshman Colby Hutchens matched Maxwell with an even-par 70 to finish one stroke back in a tie for third at 3-over 213 (71–72–70), the best finish of his young career.
Utah Valley carded a 13-over 293 on the final day to place fifth in the 12-team field with a 42-over 882 (294–295–293). Rhode Island won the team title at 31-over 871 (283–294–294).
Also for UVU, Isaiah Ellis posted a 5-over 75 to tie for 49th at 231 (78–78–75). JJ Tomsick shot 78 to tie for 53rd at 232 (80–74–78), and Andrew Hawk finished at 234 (76–76–82), tying for 58th.
