OREM—Utah Valley returns to the UCCU Center on Wednesday night to host in-state foe Westminster in nonconference play. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+, with radio coverage on the Wolverine Sports Network (960 AM/103.9 FM in Utah County and 98.3 FM/105.1 HD2 in Salt Lake).
Utah Valley (1–1) opened the season with a record-setting 116–35 win over West Coast Baptist on Nov. 4 before falling 101–77 at Boise State on Saturday. Jackson Holcombe scored a career-high 22 points against the Broncos, while Hayden Welling added 12 points and went 6-for-6 at the foul line. The Wolverines shot 49 percent from the field but went just 4-for-19 from three and committed 16 turnovers that led to 29 Boise State points as the Broncos pulled away in the second half.
Westminster enters the game in exhibition mode, as contests against Division I opponents do not count toward its NCAA Division II record. The Griffins, members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, pushed Southern Utah to the wire in a 79–77 exhibition loss on Oct. 24 and later fell 110–54 at Utah State on Nov. 3. Graduate players Michael Frazier and Colin Hayes lead a veteran roster, and the rotation includes former Utah Valley walk-ons Jake Nadauld and Peter Amakasu. Head coach Norm Parrish is in his 11th season; Phillips previously worked on Parrish's staff at Salt Lake Community College before succeeding him as head coach and leading SLCC to the 2016 NJCAA national championship.
Utah Valley leads the all-time series 3–0, with all three matchups played in Orem. The Wolverines have averaged 82.3 points per game in the series and have never trailed Westminster in any of the three contests.
UVU enters Wednesday on a 13-game home winning streak, the fifth-longest active streak in the nation. The Wolverines are 243–66 all-time inside the UCCU Center and have won 39 of their last 43 home games.
Utah Valley and Westminster will tipoff at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night at the UCCU Center. Tickets are available at GoUVU.com/Tickets.
