LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley's men's and women's teams put up strong performances at the WAC Championships back on Halloween, with both teams taking second overall and picking up a combined total of 12 All-WAC honorees.Â
The women's team was led by Morgan Nokes, who picked up her school-record fifth race win of the season to take the WAC individual title. Nokes ran a 19:27.5 6k race to win by a hair under 36 seconds. In her five race wins so far this season, Nokes has won by an average of about 36 seconds. Earlier this week, Nokes was named the WAC Female Athlete of the Year.
In addition to Nokes, the women's squad had four other runners take home All-WAC honors, with Paisley Taylor (12th), Ari Trimble (14th), Artana Nice (17th), and Elisabeth Ferrell (18th) landing on the second team.Â
On the men's side, the team was led by stellar freshman Sila Kiplagat, who took second overall by just under two seconds in just his fourth race at the collegiate level. Kiplagat earned first team All-WAC honors with his finish, and was also named the WAC Male Freshman of the Year earlier this week. Since his first race at the Gans Creek Classic in September, Kiplagat has been the team's top finisher in every race, including a win at the Color Country Invitational.
The men's team finished with seven total All-WAC honorees, including Kiplagat. Wyatt Mortenson (4th) and Jayden Fitzgarrald (10th) landed on the first team, with Porter Whitworth (12th), Alex Hartshorn (13th), Samuel Nelson (18th), and Seth Smith (20th) earning second team honors.
UP NEXT
With favorable finishes in Friday's races, the Wolverines will shift their focus to the NCAA Championships, set to be held at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo., on Nov. 22. Utah Valley is already familiar with the course, having competed there back in September at the Gans Creek Classic.
