Wolverines earn split at Uncivil War against UTC, No. 4 Iowa

12/12/2025 10:24:00 PM

HANNIBAL, Mo. — Utah Valley University split two duals at the Journeymen Wrestling Uncivil War at Hannibal High School on Friday. The Wolverines won nine of 10 matches in a 33-3 victory over Chattanooga before falling 33-7 to No. 4 Iowa in the nightcap.

Geronimo Rivera and Jack Forbes earned wins in both duals, and Bridger Ricks picked up a ranked victory for the Wolverines (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) against Chattanooga's 15th-ranked Cooper Flynn.

"Tonight's theme was fight. We knew we would be getting a game UTC before facing a top-five team in Iowa. Our fight led us to winning nine of the 10 matches against Chattanooga — including Bridger's top-20 win — and put us in position to win several matches against Iowa," head coach Adam Hall said. "I like the momentum we have going into next week against another top-25 opponent in Wisconsin. Go Wolverines!"

In the dual with Chattanooga that opened the event, Utah Valley won the first eight matches, led off by Caleb Uhlenhopp at 184 pounds. Uhlenhopp earned a quick takedown and more than a minute of riding time in the first period against Landon Jones to take a 3-1 lead after one. After an escape made it 4-1, Uhlenhopp pulled away with a four-point near fall and riding time to win by major decision, 9-1.

Kael Bennie shut out Kade Rule at 197 pounds, with all five points coming after the match was scoreless through the first two periods. Bennie rode Rule for the entire second period to build riding time, then started the third with an escape before getting a takedown and rideout with just more than a minute remaining to secure the 5-0 win.

At 285 pounds, Forbes built a 3-0 lead after one and a 6-2 advantage after two following a takedown in each period. He went on to an 8-2 decision that gave the Wolverines a 10-0 lead in the dual.
The 125-pound match was the lone contest featuring two ranked wrestlers in the dual. No. 29 Ricks was awarded a rare disqualification victory over No. 15 Cooper Flynn after the Chattanooga wrestler was assessed his fifth stalling call. Ricks trailed 4-1 after a Flynn escape early in the final two minutes of regulation, but three stalling calls against Flynn in the third period resulted in four points and a 5-4 lead for Ricks. Flynn had riding time to force sudden victory but was whistled for his fifth stalling call 58 seconds into the extra period, ending the match and adding six team points for Utah Valley to make it 16-0.

Rivera then picked up his first collegiate victory with a 6-1 decision over Bryce Luna. The freshman racked up 2:20 of riding time in the first period after Luna chose bottom following injury time to Rivera. Luna scored his lone point in the second period after a pair of stalling calls against Rivera, leading 1-0 after two. In the third, Rivera earned an escape to tie it, benefited from a second stalling call against Luna to take the lead, and sealed the win with a takedown with 36 seconds remaining before adding the riding-time point.

17th-ranked Haiden Drury made it six straight wins with a 9-4 decision over Hunter Mason. Takedowns in each of the first two periods helped Drury build a 7-0 cushion en route to his 10th win of the season. With No. 11 David Evans sidelined, Kayd Craig filled in at 149 pounds and took a 9-2 lead in the first period after three takedowns on his way to a 10-3 victory over Yuta Otero.

Mark Takara won a close contest at 157 pounds, edging Cavarius Liddie 5-4. The match was scoreless until the third period, when Takara started on top and scored a three-point near fall before the two traded reversals. Liddie earned a late escape and had riding time, but Takara's near fall held up for the one-point victory.

Chattanooga earned its lone win of the dual at 165 pounds, as Mason Reiniche defeated freshman Zyon Trujillo 5-3.

Trevor Frank then made his season debut at 174 pounds with an impressive technical fall to close out the dual. Frank won 15-0, ending the match with 14 seconds remaining in the second period over Kamdyn Munro, who was ranked No. 33 in the country as recently as last week. Frank recorded a first-period takedown and four-point near fall before adding two more four-point near falls in the second. His victory accounted for the final five points in the 33-3 result and marked Utah Valley's third bonus-point win.

Against the Hawkeyes, Ricks opened the dual against No. 6 Dean Peterson, who used a second-period takedown to take a 3-1 lead before adding another in the third to extend it en route to a 7-2 decision.

Rivera took early control against Joey Cruz with a takedown just seconds into the match and added another in the first period to take a 6-2 lead after one. As he did earlier in the day, Rivera built riding time early, amassing 1:50 in the first period on his way to an 8-3 victory.

No. 9 Nasir Bailey used a takedown and two four-point near falls in the first period to seize control of the 141-pound bout against Drury. Drury adjusted, but Bailey rode the early surge to a 12-1 major decision, beginning a stretch of seven straight Iowa victories.

That run included five Hawkeyes ranked in the top 10 and featured pins from No. 6 Ryder Block and No. 3 Michael Caliendo. At 184 pounds, top-ranked Angelo Ferrari scored a first-period takedown in a tight 4-1 decision over Uhlenhopp. In the penultimate match of the night, Bennie came up just short against Gabe Arnold at 197 pounds, falling 4-2.

In the final bout of the tri-dual event, Forbes tallied 17 points in a major decision over Easton Fleshman. Forbes recorded five takedowns — two each in the first and third periods — to cap his day with a commanding 17-4 victory.

The Wolverines will face another Big Ten opponent next week when they travel to No. 22 Wisconsin for a dual on Thursday, Dec. 18.
