RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Emma Haygood continued her hot streak at the plate with three hits and two RBIs and Cam Davis pitched four shutout innings of relief to lead Utah Valley to a 6-1 win over the California Baptist Lancers on Saturday afternoon.
Haygood finished the weekend with seven hits in eight at-bats, including three doubles and six RBIs. Haygood's lone out made was a line drive to left.
Davis capped off a strong series in the circle with four shutout innings in relief of Avery Sapp, who herself allowed just one run in three innings of work. Davis' final line score for the weekend included 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed across three appearances.
After falling behind in the first in the first two games of the series, the Wolverines struck first in the finale. The first three batters reached to load the bases, then Haygood crushed a double down the right field line to plate two. Angelique Mann had a chance to bring in more runners, but her screaming liner was caught by the third baseman.
Sapp managed her way out of a jam in the bottom of the first after CBU put runners at second and third with nobody out. Sapp struck out two then got a popout to short.
The Lancers cut their deficit in half with a well-executed squeeze play, but were unable to muster up much more offense the rest of the way. CBU went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The two sides traded zeroes until the sixth inning when the Wolverines rallied for four to pull away. Megan Gibbs got the party started with a leadoff solo homer to left — her fourth of the year — and now needs just three homers to set the UVU career record.
After Mya Higareda walked and Sapp reached on an infield single, Britney Moreno smoked a triple down the right field line to plate both runners. Tatum Hall then capped off the rally with a single up the middle to make it 6-1.
Davis was at her sharpest in the final two frames, getting four of the final six outs via the strikeout.
Utah Valley will return home to Utah for its first games in their home state. The Wolverines will travel up to Logan on Wednesday, March 12, to play Utah State before opening the home season — if the weather cooperates — with a three game set against the Grand Canyon Lopes starting Friday, March 14.
