Four school records fall on successful day in Provo and Cedar City

CEDAR CITY & PROVO, Utah — Utah Valley University saw four of school records fall on a successful day at the SUU Coliseum Championships and BYU Robison Invitational. On the day, Utah Valley had 22 first-place finishes between the meets, with the majority of the team competing in Cedar City, where the Wolverines captured 21 golds. As a team, UVU had 22 personal records that affected the school's top 10.

Both the men's and women's pole vault records fell, with Jocelyn Phillips surpassing four meters to post a 4.05 mark that broke last week's previous record from Grace Williams, who earned the WAC Field Athlete of the Week. Noah Peterson also broke the men's pole vault record three weeks after Porter Westerlind took the top spot. Peterson won the event on Thursday after hitting 5.30 meters which puts him in the top 30 in the west. Emily Conlin also recorded a top 10 PR in the pole vault, hitting 3.85 meters to move into fourth in the record book.

Kelsi Oldroyd won both the javelin and long jump at SUU, breaking her own javelin record with a throw of 56.97 meters. She also won the long jump with her best mark of 6.03 meters while Krista Farley took third with a personal record of 5.91 meters to also move into third in the top 10.
 
Elisabeth Ferrell set the women's record in the mile with her performance at BYU earlier Thursday with an altitude-adjusted time of 4:50.79. Her time also converts to the No. 10 mark (4:29.24) in the 1500. Also at BYU, Kaitelyn Emmons' personal record time of 10:54.90 puts her in eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she won the event in Provo.

The throwers had a big day with six first-place finishes and seven top 10 personal bests. Trevor Hill won both the men's shot put (16.51) and discus (50.56), with the latter improving the No. 3 mark in the UVU record book. Luis Diaz Bojorquez was second in the shot put (16.30) and discus (46.64) and won the hammer with a throw of 53.17 meters that moves him up to No. 7.
 
Eddie Sonny Garcia had two top 10 personal records; his shot put mark (15.74) improves on the No. 6 spot, and his second-place finish in the hammer (53.15) ties him for eighth. Garcia was also third in the shot put (15.74) while Payton Vernon took fourth (15.60) with a personal best that enters the top 10 at No. 9. Nick Forsyth, the school-record holder in the javelin, won the event with his best throw of 60.22 meters.

Grace Degarimore had two golds and one silver on Thursday. The freshman won the shot put (13.84) and hammer (53.14), with the mark in the hammer moving her into fifth in the record book. She was also second in the discus while Katyana Dexter was third with a PR of 42.79 meters that puts her at No. 10 at UVU.

The women's relay squads also set a pair of top 10 times on Thursday. Gabriele Dabb, Kali McEuen, Whitney Fisher, and Ella Hopper won the 4x400 with a time of 3:42.71, which is second all-time. Quincy Bonds joined Hopper, McEuen, and Fisher in the 4x100 with a winning time of 45.59 seconds that is third in the record book. Bonds also took first (13.41) and McEuen was third (13.85) in the 100-meter hurdles.
 
Matthew Maclennan took second with a PR in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.22 seconds to move up to third at UVU. Kade Thompson recorded first-place finishes in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. His time of 20.79 seconds moved him to third in the 200-meter top 10 while his 10.42-second finish in the 100 was just .01 seconds from his PR. Gabe Remy was the runner-up to Thompson in both races.

The men had two top 10 times after taking the top two spots in the 800. Max Clemons won the race with his adjusted time of 1:51.17 in sixth while Pierce Vittone took second with his adjusted time of 1:51.34 putting him seventh in the record book.

Ari Trimble won the 3,000-meter race and moved to ninth in the top 10 with a converted time of 9:56.92. Liz Zwahlen finished second, and Natalia Boltz was third in the race. The men had the top two finishers in the mile with Wyatt Mortenson taking first and Gilbert Olivas second.
 
On Friday, Alex Hartshorn and Mo Guled are slated to run the mile at BYU, which is scheduled for an 11:54 a.m. start. On Saturday, Cameron Franklin and Isaiah Archer will run the men's 400, with Hopper set to compete in the women's 400 in Provo.
