Lepine Tied for Second After Firing 66 at National Golf Invitational

MARICOPA, Ariz.— Clement Lepine fired a 6-under-par 66 to lead the Utah Valley University men's golf team in Friday's opening round of the National Golf Invitational presented by Golfweek. Lepine sits alone in second place on the individual leaderboard, just one shot back of Utah State's Enrique Karg for the top spot.

"Clem played so nicely," said head coach Chris Curran. "He got a bit of a chip on his shoulder after not playing to his expectations at the WAC Tournament. This is a great event for us to gain experience and give some of our younger guys more tournament reps."

As a team, Utah Valley posted a 1-over-par 289 and is tied for sixth in the 10-team field. Utah State leads at 11-under-par, followed by Ohio State (-10), Stetson (-7), George Mason (-2), West Virginia (-1), Utah Valley (+1), Richmond (+1), Rhode Island (+2), Oregon State (+2), and Texas State (+4).

Lepine's 66 featured a near-flawless scorecard with seven birdies, 10 pars, and just one bogey. He is second overall in the 49-player field.

Zachary Erskine carded a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 17th. He recorded four birdies in his round, including three on the back nine.

Isaiah Ellis finished with a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 38th. Ellis tallied five birdies in the round, including a stretch of three straight on holes 12, 13, and 14.

Paxton Maxwell shot a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 44th, registering two birdies and 10 pars. Andrew Hawk rounded out the scoring with an 8-over-par 80 and is in 48th place after recording three birdies and nine pars.

Utah Valley continues play at the NGI on Saturday with second-round action. The Wolverines will tee off on hole No. 1 beginning at 7:40 a.m. (PT). Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
